YOGA PERSONAL INSTRUCTION WORKSHOP
WORKSHOP DATES 2012
This workshop is for both yoga students and yoga teachers who are keen to rapidly improve their experiential knowledge of 'CORE' anatomy, functional movement and the mind body relationship to yoga postures.
The common thread behind dysfunctional movement and postural patterns is lack of 'CORE' awareness and 'CORE' activation. It doesn't matter if you are a body builder, tri-athlete, yoga teacher or someone who works at a desk all day, 'CORE' activation may be lacking leading to compensation and dysfunction movement patterning.
KEY ASPECTS OF THIS WORKSHOP INCLUDE:
Activation of CORE anatomy and stability through yoga postures:
- Learn the value of ‘awareness’ and its key role in developing core stability and timing – strengthening or hardening the core will not create stability.
- Develop anatomical knowledge relating to the specific location and function of core stabilizing muscles key to functional posture and asana alignment.
- De-mystify common instructions provided in yoga class by understanding the deeper anatomy through practical experience.
- Learn to ‘engage’ core muscle while performing yoga postures through direct one-on-one experience with a qualified teacher.
Start to identify, name and understand the patterns of dysfunction that prevent core stability regardless of how much yoga you do:
- Learn the most common dysfunctional postural patterns we face in our modern day and how the correct these using yoga asana practice.
- Understand the relationship of opposing muscle groups and muscles imbalances that can be transformed through yoga asana practice.
- Learn how to de-activate chronically tight muscle and soft tissue by engagement of key muscles that open the body naturally, rather than using force to lengthen or stretch the muscles.
- Learn how to fine tune your observation skills from a musculoskeletal perspective directly relating to yoga postures empowering you to adjust your own posture from a functional and well as structural alignment perspective.
Read the emotional story (from a Psychosomatic viewpoint) that is carried in physical habits, and can be released through deeper:
- Begin to understand the psychosomatic (mind-body) relationship that creates postural dysfunction and imbalances throughout the body.
- Realise for yourself why you are in the physical shape you are in with personalised body readings and discussion held within the workshop.

Aside from the crucial knowledge base the sessions provide to current yoga students and yoga teachers, Yoga Personal Instruction provides a solid foundation for those who would like to try yoga but are a little uneasy about joining a class. It is also for people who have tried yoga and found they couldn’t keep up in class, felt way out of their depth, and never returned – do not let these experiences deter you!
TESTIMONIALS
''I decided to join Chris' Yoga Personal Instruction Workshops because as a Doctor I know how important it is to have great posture. Chris took one look at me and without knowing my condition he pointed out my hyperlordosis of my lumbar spine (a lower back curvature I have had since early childhood.) My Dad also has this curvature, so I thought it was hereditary. Chris explained many positive changes can be made to hereditary conditions if you have the right awareness. True to form within six weeks my lumbar curve has normalized, and as a result I have been running better than ever and I also had the best beach swim of my life. This was the most surprising change as I am an ex-competitive swimmer and even at my peak I never felt as strong as I do with my newly activated core muscles, strength and posture. Due to a change in my diet and understanding the Psychosomatic (mind-body) reasons for my weight gain taught in Chris' workshop, I have dropped two dress sizes within weeks!
Thank you, Chris. I can now run with a light step and quick pace. I attribute most of this to you. Thank you very much!!''

"I tried yoga years ago and just thought it was about stretching. I had no idea that there were core muscles that needed to be activated or that breathing was important. Every time I work with Chris I learn more and more about how yoga benefits me, and how to release my own pain. Chris is a fantastic teacher and I would recommend him to anyone." – Georgie
WHY DO YOGA PERSONAL INSTRUCTION?
The key components often missing for individuals in a general yoga class today is personal attention at the level of functional movement. Most yoga students and teachers require tailored instructions to truly understand and implement core activation and functional movement patterns when practising yoga. Direct attention leads to direct understanding, which opens the doorway to deeper yoga awareness. Yoga students and teachers rapidly improve after receiving individual attention relating to the deeper core anatomy.
Download introduction of key aspects you will learn:
- Core activation - Session 1.pdf
- Postural alignment - Session 2.pdf
- Breathing - Session 3.pdf
Core activation alone is vastly misunderstood and therefore misused in yoga. Only when awareness of these simple yet elusive principles occurs, in a personalised and practical way, can the practicing student or teacher rapidly grow to integrate the core anatomy into the yoga postures.
Most importantly, Yoga Personal Instruction is for everyone and particularly for those who have great difficulty with flexibility or doing yoga postures. Unlike sport, yoga is not a competition – it is the complete opposite. Yoga is about you and what you can do on the day; it is about self-observation and discovery; it is about true acceptance of self, which gives you the insight on how to improve on your situation and reveal more of your true potential.
As a participant of the Yoga Personal Instruction workshop you will receive a FREE Yoga Personal Instruction ebook yoga manual which includes, all yoga postures in the workshop including pictures and detailed descriptions of how to perform each pose (valued at $35). It is advised but not necessary to print a copy prior to attending a workshop for note taking.
Modern western science has come to understand, explain and isolate dysfunctional movement patterns relating to core muscles that stabilize the trunk and extremities, and it is hailed as the most important fitness discovery of the last 2 decades. In fact the Western and Eastern view on health relating to the musculoskeletal system is finally integrating on a much deeper level. It is now being realised that being physically fit does not necessarily equate to health and certainly not balance of the body-mind. In is now recognised that exercise, including yoga practice, can strengthen psychosomatic (mind-body) imbalances because the body-mind is often functioning unconsciously with fear and limitation.
It is the very nature of hatha yoga that the muscles work to contribute to core stabilisation and modifications can be made so people can build more flexibility, strength and increase body power safely. However due to our lifestyles our bodies are becoming increasingly dysfunctional, which means we compensate and often make matters worse when exercising or practicing yoga. For many people who are seeking yoga a general class is often way out of their depth due to dysfunction.
One common dysfunctional postural pattern many people develop throughout our lifetime (dramatically increased from sitting at computers all day) is upper and lower crossed syndrome. You will have seen this all to common poor postural habit when teaching your yoga class, which results in locked knees, increased lumbar curve (lower back), increased thoracic curve (hump back), shoulders rolling forward, and the head is forward off the shoulders. This postural pattern alone causes widespread problems implicating every system of the body. In the musculoskeletal system this may cause or provoke the following conditions:
- Chronic pain syndromes
- Lower back pain
- Muscle and joint pain and instability
- Acute and chronic injuries, inflammation and swelling
- Joints dislocations and mobility problems
- Nerve compression and entrapment syndromes
- Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
- Tendinitis, tendinosis and bursitis
- Sprains and strains
- Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
As yoga students and teachers it is time to become aware of dysfunctional patterns and correct them through yoga postures. The information and practical experience you will receive in this workshop will enable you to self correct old habits of movement and as teachers be able to pass on invaluable guidance and personal tuition to your own yoga students empowering them to reclaim great posture, core strength and function movement.
Yoga is Ideal For :
Office workers – who sit for long hours, are stressed, have neck tension, headaches and poor sleeping patterns
People who do labor intensive work – lifting, twisting and repeated awkward positions for long hours
Gym training & Sports people – yoga increases improves core strengthening, optimises stretching programs and corrects neural firing patterns
The Aging – yoga helps to improve physical range-of-motion, circulation and general fitness ANYONE – who wishes to increase their quality of life and longevity.
Benefits of Yoga?
Here are just a few benefits of yoga, however the benefits are endless and sometimes surprising.
- Strengthens: Joints, heart, and bones (scientifically proven to improve osteoporosis)
- Boosted immune system and digestive processes
- Body balance: correction of dysfunction neural firing patterns
- Detoxifies the entire body
- Weight loss
- Increases: muscular flexibility and strength, blood circulation, endurance, concentration, metabolism, quality of sleep
- Reduces: stress, depression, anxiety, body tension and pain, high blood pressure, cellulite
Yoga as Therapy
There is well-documented research and many case studies pointing to the benefits of yoga. It has now become more accepted by main stream health care practitioners, however in many cases they do not understand the true benefits of yoga when performed according to the important principles. Like Musculoskeletal Therapy, yoga postures address dysfunctional postural patterns and stress. Over time, these result in degeneration and pain.
TESTIMONIALS
''My name is Esther Mason and I am 61 years old and have been hearing great things about yoga for sometime. I attended a couple of classes thinking maybe there would be some individual tuition, after realising this was not the case I decided to go to the back of the room and listen and learn, to be honest I had no understanding of what I was doing, consequently I came home thinking “what do people get out of doing yoga” some stretching maybe? that was about it for me.
I then heard about Chris and his Yoga workshops so I decided to attend, it involved personal instruction and I felt it helped equip me with the information and knowledge and understanding required for me to practice yoga in a worthwhile manner.
I had no idea of core activation and how to use it, but now that I have this understanding I feel I now am experiencing the benefits of yoga. The core activation has helped in so many ways and I could see changes in my body within a week.
Each day when exercising I know have the awareness to activate my core and this had made such a big difference in all that I do.
To Chris. Thank you so much.'' - Esther
